Nelly is set to portray rock ‘n’ roll legend Chuck Berry in an upcoming Buddy Holly biopic.
Colin Hanks and Diane Guerrero have also joined the cast of Clear Lake. Previously, Irish actor Ruairi O’Connor was tapped as Buddy Holly for the biopic.
The movie will be directed by Bruce Beresford, who has received Oscar nominations for the Breaker Morant script and for directing Tender Mercies.
Clear Lake will tell the story of how Holly and other famous musicians of the late 1950s gave birth to rock ‘n’ roll while changing the trajectory of civil rights in America.
Holly died in a plane crash outside Clear Lake, Iowa, on February 3, 1959, along with Ritchie Valens, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson and pilot Roger Peterson.
The biopic is being produced by Rick French of Prix Productions and Stuart Benjamin of Stuart Benjamin Productions.
In 2010, Nelly and Berry had performed a free concert in their home city of St. Louis. Berry died in 2017 at the age of 90.
